Practical 10

The most important lesson I have learnt throughout my EIR journey is definitely related to resources from the website. Getting relevant and accurate resources can be a difficult task if we are not aware of what kind of resources does the website provides. Therefore I need evaluation skills to help me judge whether which is a better website for researching.

Doing online quiz and portfolio really helps me understand the EIR topics since we do not have any lectures as I need to study the lecture notes for quiz and read up to do my portfolio.

Apart from that, I learnt alot from the wiki assignment. Teamwork is definitely needed from each members, because we are from different diploma, so we might not have the same free time slot to meet each other. But for my group, 4 out of 5 of us are from the same class so we don't face much problems doing the assignment. With that, we are able to combine our findings to produce a good report on our topic which is Impact of computer crimes on business. Moreover, we even did an assignment which is contributed by the whole class. I think everyone did a good job since the completion of the assignment was a success. All the assignments also help me learn new knowledges which are not including in our diploma subject.

I'm very happy to be in this CDS as I think it is the best out of the 3 I have taken because I learnt alot of skills and knowledge from this CDS such as researching, evaluating and even got the opportunity to present our wiki assignment.

My Dream Holiday

If I were given a virtual budget to go to my dream holiday destination, it will definitely be Anfield in England, which is the home ground of Liverpool F.C, I would be very happy to be able to visit the stadium to see how it looks like and watch them play matches.

One multimedia websites (tourism / travel related ones) that showcase the places of my Dream Holiday is http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/history/tour-and-museum. Once I visited this website, it shows what this football club had achieve since when it was founded, they had won 18 titles and 5 European cups.

I will use Accessibility and Authority to evaluate the website. When I clicked on the contact us tab, I can select the type of enquiry and then ask a question online if I have any doubts. I also can use Live chat to contact the team. Therefore the author can be contacted easily. Next, as I would like to visit the stadium, it will be better if I can get some images of the place I am visiting. From the website, they did show some images of the places we will be vising around the stadium such as the players dressing room. We also can enjoy something to eat or drink in boot room sports cafe.

In Second life, our groups had decided to go to Eiffel Tower in Paris.

In Virtual life experience, we get to see how the places are like, I think its very exciting to use my character walking around in the virtual world as I had not been to Paris before so I can get a rough idea how the environment are like over there, while through the multimedia website, we can actually see the actual images of the places but we do not get virtual experience like using a character to walk around the place in the virtual world.

Wahab's blog looks very simple with little picture but i realised that he expressed words in a fun way which makes it interesting for readers to read. He got a cool heading on his blog which is 'THE AWESOMEMEST GUY IN THE CLASS'. I think that by looking and reading his blog, we can know what kind of person Wahab is.

1. Do you think it is more effective to search the invisible web (databases) than using search
engines, meta-search or subject directories? Why?

Yes, I think that invisible web is more effective than using other search engine as from what I have learnt, they provides accurate and reliable resources, as well as up-to-date information. So I think user will find it very easy to find relevant resources they need in a short time. They contain articles, abstracts and citations, census data, and patents. Also search engine do not index information stored in the databases. General purpose search engine often cannot acccess data in invisible web database.They also support boolean operators just like Google, phrase and proximity searches. Lastly they allow limition to improve out search results and allow truncation.

2. Name one database which you will use for your research topic. Why?

One database I will use is Global Issues in Context under Reports and Statistics as under the description of this database, it states use GIC for insights and information on issues such as science and technology, which is the closest to my research topic so I chose to take a look into this database. In the database, I can choose to type and search or browse an issue or topic. I chose to type and search as it save me time looking and clicking. After I hit enter in the search, the results are categorised in Global Viewpoints, News, Magazines, Academic Journals and Reference. 2 relevant resources I found are:

As I am from Diploma in Media and Communication Technology, I will need resources such as multimedia and technology related stuff. I can find all the information from Global Issues in Context. Under the browse issue or topic, I can find related topics to my course such as Digital Communications and Digital Systems and Softwares. I can use this database to help me in my research of digital devices for my current assignment this term.

Virtual Youths Meeting and Networking on Second Life

Meeting with Hong Kong Student in Second life is totally a new experience for me as I have never use this software before, it was interesting and I really felt exciting about this activity. I login at 7.10pm on the meeting day so as to get myself ready, First I tried to teleport to Temasek Polytechnic as that was the meeting area for my group and i wasted no time in getting there.

One thing I like best about this virtual experience which i cannot get in real-life is people in this virtual world are more friendly and everyone observe their behaviours. There is no any improper language seen and everyone communicate with proper manners. In second life, I do observe special mannerisms or behaviours as it is my first time meeting them so I must give them a good image of myself and of a Temasek Polytechnic student. Most of them are older than me so its appropriate for me to show respect to them as my senior, even if I do not know them in real life. I feel great about meeting and sharing my dream holiday with my new friends as I am able to speak out how I feel and they really can understand me when they show out their feelings in words. One thing special about discussing ethics of using social media with my new friends are we can share what should and should not do in the social media. From this e-learning, I learnt that we should not use social media to harm people as it can lead to a serious problem for the victims. Therefore we should observe mannerisms even in the social media and in the internet. One most challenging experience I had is to get to talk to the new friends as some of them are already busy talking to other people.

E-shopping Activity

I think that the E-shopping activity on Internet is quite interesting as we got to imagine having $500 to go on the shopping spree online, which let us choose what we want. Tons of items drifted into my mind but I only choose the items that I wanted most, an Ipod Touch as it serves many uses.

Why do you think there is a need for researchers to know the different purposes of websites?

It is important for researcher to know the different purposes of websites because every website contain different content. Some websites are Blogs and Wikis, online forums, newgroups, mailing, full-texts documents, databases, electronic journals and magazines, multimedia sources, current awareness and alerting services, podcasting, FTP archives and WWW sites. Different websites provides us with different subject. Therefore it is important that researchers know the different purposes of websites so they will not get the wrong informations.

One website I often visit is www.pspiso.com, an online forum. There are many discussion topic such as general chat, sports, news. Discussions and news related to Game Consoles. We also can share our psp games online, applications, saves, cheats and game manual. Computer related stuff are also included such as games and software. We can share our movies and music too. There are also people who post threads to request for games and other stuffs on this website. I think that this is a very good website because alot of games related stuff are here.

Comparing my website site I had used to compare with an advocacy website

I have chosen the website http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/. It is an independent global campaigning organisation that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace.

The first difference is www.apple.com.sg is an business and marketing website while www.greenpeace.org is an advocacy website. The second difference is apple.com.sg is created to promotee their products for sale while greenpeace.org is created to influence public opinion and attempt to increase memberships in the organisation. The last difference is apple.com.sg offer online catalogues, information about the company and offer online services while greenpeace.org actively compaign for people to give support to the issue selected.

The most meaningful lesson I have learnt from practical 1 and 2 are there are many different kind of website and we need to identify the purpose of the website we visit before getting the information from there. This could prevent me from getting wrong information. Some purposes are for information, advocacy, business and marketing, news, personal and entertainment. Identifying the purposes will be help us effectively in getting to our destination website.

Activity 3 : $500 E-Shopping Spree

White Apple Ipod Touch 32GB : $428


If I were given $500 dollars for online shopping, the first thing i will think of is getting the latest White Ipod Touch which I can get it from the Apple website. As it has been very popular nowadays, it is commonly seen outside.

The first reason why I choose to get it from the Apple website is because they offers fast and free shipping, therefore i can save the shipping fee and shop online without going out. In addtion, they also provide free laser engraving so I can request them to engrave my name so I can recognise my Ipod Touch easily.

Secondly, Ipod Touch has many functions. I can take pictures, listen to music, watch movies, play games, surf the internet, download millions of Applications and go online whenever a Wi-Fi network is available. Therefore it led me to the decision of getting a 32GB Ipod Touch instead of the 16GB as I will definitely use alot of memory on all these functions. It is also small and light so it is very convenient for me to bring it out with me.

The next item I would like to purchase is the speaker on the picture above, which is also from the Apple website. When I'm at home, It benefits me with this speaker as I can turn on music loud using my Ipod Touch, so that it entertains me at home.

The website states that the speaker has amazing volume and sound quality, sound in all directions with 360-degree sound field, connects easily to a variety of audio devices and long battery life. That is the reason I choose this speaker is because I love the function of the speaker being able to sound in all directions, so that I don't have to positioned the speaker facing me when I'm listening to music, as I am quite a lazy person who hates to tidy up my things.

Hi all XuanDong here, 18 this year, Diploma in Media and Communication Technology. I hope to get to know more friends in this class as most of us are from different courses.

One of my favourite past time activities is playing online computer games like gunbound, maplestory and dota. I used to spend most of my time on these games when i'm free and always got too engrossed in it that i forgot to do my homework.

My favourite singers are rock bands such as All Time Low, Destine, Green Day, The Maine, Simple Plan. I prefer listening to English songs than Chinese songs. Below are some pictures of them.

One skills that I would like to talk about is 8 ball pool. As it takes alot of skills and practice to master this game, I would have to hit the correct point to plot the ball as well as exerting a correct force to get a good placing for the next shot.
